“On the Modification of
Clouds” Luke Howard´s Wolkenklassifikation von 1803: Ebenso einfach wie genial unterteilte Howard die Wolken in Grundformen, die er den einzelnen Höhenstockwerken der Atmosphäre zuteilte. Er nennt: Cirrus (Federwolke), Cumulus (Haufen-wolke), Stratus (Schichtwolke) und Nimbus. Stratus: a widely extended, continuous, horizontal sheet, increasing from below. Cumulus: convex or conical heaps, increasing upward from a horizontal base. Cirrus: parallel, flexuous, or diverging fibres, extensible in any or in all directions. Nimbus: The rain cloud. It is a horizontal sheet, above which the cirrus spreads, while the cumulus enters it laterally and from beneath. Die moderne Meteorologie unterscheidet aus wolkenphysikalischen Gründen zwischen tiefen, mittelhohen und hohen Wolken: Während die tiefen Wolken aus Wassertröpfchen bestehen, sind die hohen Wolken Ansammlungen von Eiskristallen. Die mittelhohen Wolken setzen sich aus einer Mischung von Eispartikeln und Wassertröpfchen zusammen. Der Cumulus gehört zu den tiefen Wolken, Nimbostratus ist eine mittelhohe Wolke und der Cumulonimbus erstreckt sich vertikal durch alle drei Wolkenstockwerke. Wolken bestehen aus kondensiertem Wasserdampf in Form von Wolkentröpfchen oder aus Wasser in kristalliner Form, Eis. Auch existieren Wolken mit einem Eis Wasser-Gemisch. Zur Wolkenbildung kommt es, wenn eine bestimmte Temperatur unter-schritten wird. Dann kondensiert der Wasserdampf an den Kondensationskernen - es formt sich eine Wolke.
